Orchestral Bonanza Despite our world's wealth of outstanding orchestral music, the Northwest's airwaves remain all but barren of new symphonies, concertos, tone poems, etc. The thrillingly complex music by Elliott Carter and astounding sense of space in Varèse's Déserts should offer some remedy. Also, some music of my youth: the Poem of Fire by Alexander Scriabin, who with Richard Strauss took tonality to its limits with super-saturated chromaticism in the early 1900s.

Sacred Minimalism A few months ago I asked composer and music writer Gavin Borchert to curate another broadcast. Gavin fashioned a program of sacred minimalist music; he even found an anomalous though quite wonderful piece by Verdi (Verdi!). The splendid singing of the Esoterics along with the Adams, Reich and Bryars made for a fine broadcast.

Text and Music We can thank recording technology for opening the gulf between acoustic and electrically amplified voices. Mawby's Ave verum corpus not only illustrates the composer's masterful vocal writing but a feel for the resonance of reverberant spaces. Some composers treat the recorded voice functionally. Di Pietro's matter-of-fact narration underlines the erotic power of his Anoxia; similarly, Scott cleverly wraps an omniscient narrator-shill in a crazy quilt of twittering electronic sounds. Electronic processing the voice yields results as diverse as the luxuriant warmth of Her Song or the visceral lo-fi of intimacy (a polemic).

Christian Choral Music What lurks behind the frenzied feeding on 20th century sacred music? Until the 1990s, every religion has been quite derelict in commissioning composers for the last several centuries (and church attendance is down too!), music lovers have flocked to Pärt, Tavener, Rutter and other composers of sacred choral music, some of it quite dissonant and adventurous. Well-regarded for his sacred music, Penderecki was a pioneer in the sacred music of the 1950s and 60s. Composed in 1965-66, his Passio et mors Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundam Lucam (aka St. Luke's Passion) juxtaposes extended vocal and instrumental techniques (hissing, shouting, grunting, glissandi, etc.) next to the majestic Baroque timbres heard in the Passions of J.S. Bach. Personally, I'm atheist by faith, but I enjoy a resonant dominant 7th as much as any religion devotee!

String Trios and Quartets Quartets such as Shostakovich's harrowing 8th string quartet almost convince me of the old saw that the string quartet is the most difficult and personal musical medium for a composer. The Finnissy and Durand Trios refute any rumors that the so-called New Complexity composers (Durand was a student of Ferneyhough) all sound the same. One of fifteen string quartets, Riley's Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector ranks with the best of Stravinsky and Poulenc for unfettered ebullience.
